US Armed Forces Conducts Lethal Attack in Eastern Pacific, Leading to Four Fatalities
According to a high-ranking defense spokesperson, the American armed forces executed a fatal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the Pacific Ocean, resulting in the deaths of four individuals.
“A US joint task force carried out a lethal kinetic strike on a craft operated by a terrorist group in open sea. Intelligence confirmed the vessel was traveling along a known drug smuggling route and was involved in illicit drug transport. All four male narco-terrorists were eliminated, and no American forces were injured.”
Context and Prior Strikes
This announcement follows a day after an announcement regarding a blockade of all targeted oil tankers to and from Venezuela. That statement on social media, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil profits to fund drug trafficking and other crimes, pledging to increase the military presence.
Just on the previous day, the Pentagon said it had conducted strikes on three boats it accused of trafficking drugs in the Pacific, killing eight people. Beginning on 2 September, more than 20 strikes have killed at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.
Government Defends Tactics Amid Scrutiny
The administration has encountered growing demands to make public video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, officials have refused to do so. The administration has defended its campaign as a success, saying it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is stretching the limits of lawful warfare.
While the administration has stated the campaign is about halting drugs destined for the US, remarks from a senior aide appeared to suggest a broader political objective. In a recent interview, the chief of staff said the president “wants to keep on blowing boats up until Venezuela's president cries uncle.”
This indicates the military campaign may be part of a push to oust Venezuela's sitting government.
