The Three Lions to Launch UEFA Euro 2028 Campaign at City’s Home Ground
The English squad will initiate their Euro 2028 adventure at the Manchester City’s stadium, on the condition that they attain the relatively straightforward entry for a championship taking place in most of the United Kingdom and the Irish Republic.
Manchester City’s home ground has not hosted an English men’s fixture since May 2016, when the visitors were defeated 2-1 in a friendly, but is expected to host the Three Lions for their opening fixture on June 10, 2028.
The English side are scheduled to play their last two group stage games at the national stadium, but, should they win their group, their round of 16 match would take place at St James’ Park. Securing the runner-up spot would mean starting the playoffs at Everton’s ground.
Tournament Launch and Demonstration
The tournament was inaugurated at an ceremony in a London landmark on Wednesday night. High-ranking officials from Uefa and the host football associations were heckled as they arrived the site by around fifty pro-Palestine demonstrators, who called for the Israeli team to be removed from international football because of the Gaza crisis.
Placards were displayed with slogans saying “Show Israel the red card” and “You are complicit”, while protesters shouted: “Kick Israel out.”
Championship Fixture List
The opening game of the European Championship will be held at the Principality Stadium in the Welsh capital, on June 9, 2028, a match that will feature the Dragons if they qualify.
Wembley Stadium will host the penultimate rounds and the title decider, which will be held on July 9, 2028 with a commencement at 5pm.
It is expected that an afternoon start, which will also be implemented for UEFA Champions League finals from the upcoming season, will attract households and help engage a wider spectrum of viewers.
Host Nations
The Irish team are scheduled to play their initial fixture at the Aviva Stadium and Scotland would play similarly at the national stadium of Scotland.
Each host nation’s squad will enter the qualification process; two reserved places will be reserved for any that miss out on Euro 2028 through the qualification path.
Venues and Elimination Phase
The Birmingham venue and Spurs’ ground complete the nine host stadiums. Every stadium will hold at least one knockout match, with the last eight held at each country’s national stadium.
The qualification draw will be conducted in Belfast, which was dropped as a host city last year when it emerged the proposed venue could not be upgraded in time, on December 6, 2026.
