The Northern Irish champion celebrates Sports Personality victory with twin awards.
Seconds before the announcement, a anxious idea raced through the golfer's mind. He said he was concerned, "Not a Formula 1 star this time."
"This has been a fantastic night for golf," the champion said. "Golf was celebrated in such a significant way, with the team winning and then with my award. It's a huge moment for golf, and perhaps we can capitalize on that."
In this instance, however, there was no late twist. The result was uncontested, allowing a thrilled McIlroy to enjoy a standout evening for both himself and the European Ryder Cup winners, who were crowned team of the year.
Constant Motion
Instead of opting to attend the post-ceremony celebrations, McIlroy was already focusing on his immediate plans. After played in the Golf Channel Games in Florida and jetted to the UK, he was returning immediately to the sunshine state.
"The last 24 hours have been a hectic 24 hours," he said. "My plan is for a little bit of downtime over Christmas."
Hunger for More
However, McIlroy insisted he has no plans to slow down, notwithstanding securing the ultimate golfing achievement earlier in the year. "I am confident I've got a several strong seasons in me," he claimed.
"Further big titles, season-long rankings, Ryder Cups, that's the aim. But provided that you feel like you can keep getting better and have the hunger, that's the key."
Squad Celebration
At the same time, teammate Tommy Fleetwood, who was on stage to collect the team award, also lauded golf's exceptional night and his close friend's individual success.
"These become the moments that will live with us forever so to get the public's recognition for that is truly special," he stated. "And to be there Rory win, I think he has earned it so much."
After it was noted that McIlroy was only the third player from golf to win the award in its long history, Fleetwood chuckled before quipping, "Not a very popular bunch are we!"
Looking Ahead
His goal is to finally win his maiden major next year but he understands McIlroy still desires more success. "If you want to be the best you can be, and you're still motivated, you'll find things to improve," he noted.
Football Loyalty
Before McIlroy left, one final question arose. A devoted Manchester United fan, he has been requested to display his trophies at Old Trafford before. Would he be tempted to do it again after his new triumphs?
"Provided that they halt the flow of so many goals on their own pitch," he answered with a grin. "There is progress. There's a little bit of optimism around."
Following a 2025 for the ages, it's no wonder that the champion golfer is looking on the upside.
