The New Animated Series' Introductory Sequence Chose the Wrong Critical Role Track
The Mighty Nein, the newest animated adventure by the beloved role-playing group, unveiled a new introductory sequence. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and criminals fighting hard and making their mark, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for key figures including the voice actor's mage Caleb, and Travis Willingham's orc warlock, the character Fjord.
Overall, the intro appears stunning. However, I felt that an element was lost in the song choice.
The intro uses "Welcome to the Continent", a truly stellar song created by artist Colm McGuinness. This piece originating from the official score of that title, the second one released by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a great nostalgic option, and I suspect that fans of the sequel series will love its presence.
But for me, The series' opening fails to capture the excitement and energy that accompanied the second campaign's live-play sessions. "Your Turn to Roll", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit for me when it was initially unveiled in 2015, and it only got better when cast member Sam Riegel added lyrics to the melody for the animated Campaign 2 opening in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, Laura Bailey, a co-star, as well as the writer, the song was memorable and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series yet, but it was so infectious that I kept it on my device. This track that excites you before you dive into an episode of fantasy hijinks.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes for me. It's a grand piece of music, but from what I know of this party, I can't help but feel that its mood is a little off.
Naturally, Critical Role has already said that the series will have some changes and differences from the actual-play campaign. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be released on Prime Video from November 19. If you can't wait before that, or want a head start to get to know the personas of Critical Role's Campaign 2, the actual play are available on the audio platform and the video site.
