The Hit Drama Confirmed for Seventh Series on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty will make a comeback for its 7th season, confirmed by the broadcaster.
An upcoming six-episode season written by the show's creator will begin filming in Belfast in the coming months, as confirmed by the production team.
The actress expressed excitement about the return, stating she was "so excited" about the series' return. Adrian Dunbar added, "What a joy it is to know that the main trio will be reuniting together next year."
The last season concluded in recent years with a final episode that drew in over 17 million audience members. Speculation about a new season have been widespread ever since, but official word only arrived this week.
Fresh Obstacles for The Team
The seventh season will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the Inspectorate of Police Standards, as revealed by the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain tasked to combat misconduct within the police force.
The team's mission "has never been more difficult", and in this climate, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case to date."
Fresh Face and Intricate Plot
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, portrayed as a charismatic officer known for busts of organized crime, is accused of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
However, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the shadows, the teaser suggested.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "Everyone involved feels enormous gratitude to the show's fans."
"We're privileged to have had countless followers track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be coming back for a new installment."
Mercurio continued: "Corruption in the UK was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been compelled to use my creativity."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston described appearing in the police drama as "the role of a career".
"Beyond the program's popularity but the colleagues I've worked with I now call dear friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm so excited Line of Duty is back! Eager to work with the creator, Martin and Dunbar again. Belfast, we'll see you soon!"
Adrian Dunbar commented: "While anticipating the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the Three Amigos will be working together soon."
"Pleased with the news and looking forward to those mercurial plot developments."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty launched in 2012 and became a highly successful television series of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Kelly Macdonald.
Broadcasters haven't revealed when the new season will hit screens.
The finale of season six drew the extended plot about the hunt for kingpin known as "H" to a close, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.
Nevertheless, the network confirmed on Tuesday that a seventh series is now in development.
