Southern California Experiences Historic High Temperatures Just Days Following Major Winter Weather.
After enduring significant rainfall that led to inundation across parts of the city, LA is now confronting unseasonably high conditions for late February.
Record-Setting Readings
By Friday afternoon, the mercury soared to ninety-one degrees Fahrenheit in the city center, per data from weather officials. This easily surpasses the old record for February 27th, which was 88°F (31°C) and was set just last year.
"Exceptionally warm weather" were noted on NWS graphics for the region.
Public Health Advisories
Forecasters cautioned that Friday's heat posed an "increased danger for heat illness" for vulnerable populations. Their guidance suggested:
- Drinking plenty of fluids.
- Limiting outdoor activities during the peak heat of the day.
- Never leaving anyone unattended in a hot car.
A Dramatic Shift
This sharp rise in mercury follows closely after a intense storm system that battered the state last week. That system delivered thunderstorms, high winds, and heavy snow to the mountains, leading to evacuation orders for countless residents.
Unfortunately, the severe weather also triggered a large avalanche in the Tahoe area, which left nine people dead from.
Forecast Ahead
The outlook suggests a cooldown will arrive. The heat were predicted to decrease to around 61°F (16°C) in the city by Friday night.
Several cities that reached the 90-degree mark featured Woodland Hills, Long Beach, and Burbank. Additionally, Santa Maria, Oxnard, Camarillo, and Westwood were projected to experience the upper eighties.
For the weekend, central LA can anticipate temperatures in the eighties, with a further cooldown likely for the following week.
