Senegal's Rising Star Camara: Starting from Dreams to Afcon Favourites.

As I enter the room, Lamine Camara grabs a soccer ball he clings to until after our chat. It’s a simple visual metaphor for a dream he has always held onto. “I only wanted the beautiful game; I was focused solely on that,” states the Monaco and Senegal playmaker.

His determination and raw talent won over teams such as Génération Foot, Metz and Monaco. However, the hardest person to convince was not a sporting director or manager, but his own father. “He was against me playing soccer simply because he had never watched me,” explains Camara.

Surmounting Initial Obstacles

In time, on “a special day,” he received his dad's approval to pursue his career in the game. Another challenge was his small stature, which discouraged local club Casa Sports from offering him a contract.

However, the famed academy – the institution that nurtured stars like Sadio Mané, Papiss Cissé and Ismaïla Sarr – saw his potential instantly. After he earned the MVP in a local competition, the scouts were “shocked” to learn he was not tied down. They moved fast. “I was taken straight to the academy. They prevented me from returning home,” he recalled.

An Unforgettable Year and Continental Arrival

This move set him on a pathway to Europe. A defining period came in 2023, “a year to remember,” starting with Camara winning the African Nations Championship. Shortly after, though tired, he competed in the Under-20s Afcon, leading his country to victory and earning best player.

A month later, he was unveiled as FC Metz, emulating Mané. “Adapting was never a problem,” states the youngster. He resides alone in Europe, a choice his relatives support to keep him focused.

Inspiration and On-Field Identity

Off-field noise aren't a concern for Camara, who draws inspiration from Kevin De Bruyne’s “modesty” and exceptional skills. He is also a huge fan of players like Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, and his Senegal colleague Idrissa Gana Gueye.

His powerful shot and accuracy from set pieces are notable assets. Camara confesses he must to temper his aggression, having been sent off early in his spells at both Metz and Monaco. “It's a trait I carry with me!” he quips.

Monaco, Teammates and Future Goals

With his current club, he values the guidance of veterans such as Denis Zakaria and particularly Paul Pogba. “When I heard Monaco were interested in Pogba, I thought we are fortunate,” Camara noted.

Currently, attention is firmly on the Africa Cup of Nations with Senegal. “We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. After defeating England on their soil…,” he says, referencing a memorable 3-1 victory in Nottingham.

Regarding a future move to the Premier League, he remains focused on Monaco for now. “I am very comfortable here,” he affirms. However, he's often ribbed by icon El-Hadji Diouf about Camara's two Best Young Player awards. Camara jokes, yet remains determined about winning the senior top prize down the line.

“We are the favourites – we can’t hide from that. Having beaten England in their own country… it instills confidence.”

Moving forward, this talented midfielder combines humble beginnings, unwavering focus, and grand ambitions as he aims to lead Senegal to continental glory and build his own legendary path in the game.
