The initial novel therapies for gonorrhoea in decades are being described as a "huge turning point" in the effort against drug-resistant strains of the pathogen, according to researchers.

An International Challenge

Gonorrhoea infections are increasing around the world, with estimates suggesting over 82 million instances each year. Especially elevated rates are seen in Africa and nations within the WHO's Western Pacific region, which spans from Mongolia and China to New Zealand. Across England, cases have hit a all-time high, while infection numbers across Europe in 2023 were triple the level compared to those in 2014.

Zoliflodacin, also known as Nuzolvence, was approved by the US Food and Drug Administration in December for use against gonorrhoea. This disease can lead to major issues, including infertility. Scientists believe that focused deployment of this new drug will help slow the emergence of superbugs.

Gepotidacin, created by the drugmaker GSK, was also approved in close succession. This drug, which is also used to treat urinary tract infections, was shown in trials to be successful in treating drug-resistant strains of the gonorrhoea bacteria.

An Innovative Development Model

Zoliflodacin was the result of a new, not-for-profit approach for antibiotic development. The charitable organization GARDP collaborated with the pharmaceutical company Innoviva to see it through.

Testing Results and Worldwide Availability

As per findings released by a prominent scientific publication, zoliflodacin eradicated the vast majority of genital gonorrhoea infections.
