Former President Donald Trump revealed on Sunday that he has invited the relatives of a National Guard member tragically killed last week to come to the White House.
He noted that he contacted her family and they were “devastated”.
Details on the Tragic Shooting
Specialist Beckstrom, 20, was killed in a shooting on Wednesday in Washington DC.
Her colleague, Andrew Wolfe, 24, continues receiving treatment in critical condition.
Gatherings across West Virginia have taken place in their remembrance.
White House Invitation
The president said he’s discussed a meeting at the presidential residence for the families of both individuals of the state National Guard.
“I told them: ‘When you’re prepared, because that’s a tough thing, visit the White House. We’re going to honor Sarah,” the president told reporters. “And likewise with him, recover or not.”
Community Support
Attendees assembled over the weekend at a local school in West Virginia to pay respects to Beckstrom.
Both she and Wolfe had been fulfilling duties with the state guard as part of Trump’s federal initiative to support law enforcement in DC.
Remembering the Soldier
“Sarah was the individual that instructors wished for. She carried herself with inner fortitude, a warm expression and a positive energy that inspired people around her,” Jarrod Hankins, the leader of her previous school, told the Associated Press. “She was caring, caring and always ready to support those in need.”
Memorial plans for Beckstrom are in the process of planning.
Judicial Measures and Policy Changes
Authorities have indicted a 29-year-old individual from Afghanistan with one count of murder and two counts of attempted murder while carrying a weapon.
The incident caused the Trump administration to halt asylum applications and cease issuing entry permits to owners of travel documents.
Status of the Airman
Wolfe, a native of the city, started his military career in 2019 and is a 2019 graduate of his local high school, according to the news agency.
He is still undergoing care and is “battling to survive”, the state’s governor the governor mentioned on a news program.
Attorney general Pam Bondi informed the program that she also intended to visit the family.
Legacy of the Fallen Soldier
Sarah, from Summersville, graduated from her high school in mid-2023 and enlisted soon after, serving as a military police officer with distinction, per the military.
“She had a lot of goodness and she definitely had bravery,” Morrisey informed the crowd at the memorial. “Though her life lasted far too short, she has created a legacy that’s going to last forever.”
