New York Jets Coach Glenn Confident Kris Boyd Will Make a Full Recovery After NYC Shooting
Jets head coach Aaron Glenn has stated that he recently spoke with defensive back Kris Boyd and feels certain the player will recover well after suffering a gunshot wound in midtown Manhattan in the early hours of Sunday.
Glenn shared that Boyd, currently in the hospital, was “positive” during a recent discussion.
“That gives me comfort, is that he’s in good spirits,” Glenn said Wednesday. “His family, they’re in good spirits and he will come through this without issue.”
The coach did not know when Boyd might be released the hospital, where he is reported as in critical but steady condition.
“Don’t know just yet,” he added. “Yet I must mention, just talking to him, he felt really upbeat. Furthermore, that reassures me, that he feels like that and his words reflect that optimism.”
New York police shared surveillance images earlier this week of a man sought in the incident involving Boyd. A motive for the shooting is currently under review and police mentioned it remains uncertain if Boyd was targeted. No one else was hurt were reported.
The incident occurred in the early morning on Sunday near MSG and the bustling tourist spot. Boyd, in his late twenties, was taken to a medical center after sustaining an abdominal gunshot wound, police said. The assailant escaped.
Glenn said Boyd has occupied his thinking “constantly” since he heard about the shooting. The coach said that Boyd and his wife are new parents to a baby.
“My initial concern, he has a new baby,” Glenn remarked. “I thought of his spouse, worrying about his newborn and I want to make sure that he’s OK. That was my main concern.
“A certain process is underway, which I won’t get into, but I am pleased that he’s going to come out of this thing really, really well.”
Boyd hasn’t played in the present campaign, after joining the team, after his season was cut short due to injury on 18 August with a shoulder injury that required surgery.
Boyd came to New York as a free agent in spring and was projected as a key part of the team’s updated special teams under Glenn and ST coordinator the special teams coach. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury during a training camp practice on August 2 and had to be helped off.
Boyd continued to be present throughout the season while working his way back.
“He’s been a part of what we’re doing,” Glenn stated. “In fact, he attends every game. His commitment is total. To be one of the top special teams players in this league, he has been instrumental in guiding others.”
Boyd, hailing from the Lone Star State, spent his initial four years with Minnesota after getting drafted in the seventh round by Minnesota out of Texas University in 2019. He joined the Arizona Cardinals in 2023 and later was with the Texans later that season. Boyd signed a one-year contract valued at $1.6 million with New York in the spring.
