Manchester United Set to Secure Germany Forward Lea Schüller away from Bayern Munich
Manchester United are on the verge of sealing the deal for prolific Germany forward Lea Schüller on a permanent transfer from the Frauen-Bundesliga champions.
A Major Acquisition for United
The forward, with half a year remaining on her deal, has been a prolific goalscorer for both club and country. Having scored more than 100 goals for the German giants and scored 54 times in 82 caps for Germany. This signing is viewed as a marquee signing for the WSL team.
Departure from Munich has been anticipated since she appeared to be holding back emotions while applauding the club's fans following a win over Bayer Leverkusen this month.
It was reported in late December that the Frauen-Bundesliga was set to lose one of its leading strikers. According to reports, the formalities for the move have now been completed.
Consistent Goalscoring to Strengthen the Forward Line
The 28-year-old’s arrival should represent a major uplift to United’s forward line. She has been remarkably consistent with her finishing in Germany’s top flight.
- Over seven consecutive seasons, including the last term, she reached at least a double-digit tally of league goals.
- She won the top scorer award in the 2021-22 season with 16 goals.
Gathering Steam at Old Trafford
Securing the German international comes at a time when United seem to be gathering positive momentum.
Their recent performances include qualifying for the Champions League knockout phase playoffs in a seeded position and a win in the Conti Cup quarter-finals.
In the transfer market, the mid-season window has brought additional business:
- The acquisition of Sweden defender Hanna Lundkvist on a multi-year deal.
- The contract extension for Japan playmaker Hinata Miyazawa, who has become fan favourite since arriving in 2023.
Regarding the midfielder's new deal, a club official stated: “She has become a vital part to the way we play. Her footballing intelligence and skill allows her and the team to dominate play from the middle of the park.”
The new defender, having arrived from a side from the NWSL, added: “You can sense how much the club have progressed in the last few years, competing in one of the strongest leagues in the world and performing in the Champions League.”
