Cameron Norrie achieved the most important win of his career by coming back from a set down to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz 4-6, 6-3, 6-4 in the second round of the prestigious indoor tournament.

While he had previously beaten Alcaraz on two separate matches, this triumph represents Norrie's initial success over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Enormous. So big for me," said Norrie, who joins as the newest British man in history to overcome a top-ranked player. "Bouncing back from health issues last year, I lost in the first round of qualies here. I just aimed to embrace my game in the latter part of the year. To secure a win like this, it's the greatest win of my professional life, my initial victory over the world No 1 and arguably the most in-form competitor in the sport right now."

Norrie, ranked No 31, also halted Alcaraz's impressive streak of nine finals in a row and 17 straight elite tournament wins, which was the finest stretch of performances in the young champion's early career.

Alcaraz appeared to be moving confidently towards victory at the start as he sailed in the first set. Yet, Norrie slowly fought his way into the match by delivering with improved accuracy and engaging the Spaniard into prolonged, grueling exchanges. His relentless steadiness and reliability slowly took its toll.

During large parts of the battle, the world number one served well but he had difficulty to locate his rhythm on his baseline shots. The 22-year-old seemed particularly struggling executing his forehand, which has been the best shot in the game for most of this season, committing 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 unforced errors. On the other side, the British player offered Alcaraz very few errors, sustaining his consistency, physicality and penetration all match while serving efficiently and selecting opportunities to advance forward and attack well.

Personal Background

After dealing for an extended period due to a major physical setback and difficulties with his performance, the tennis professional fell as low as No 91 this season. After making the advanced stages at Wimbledon and the Roland Garros fourth round subsequently, this win reinforces the 30-year-old's progress as he seeks to return to the top 20 and even higher. Alcaraz, notwithstanding his extraordinary accomplishments, is has not yet figure out how to produce his finest performance indoors.
