Scorching conditions and intense wildfires have devastated the dry landscape of Western Australia. With temperatures forecast to persist climbing above 40C (104F) over the coming days, a major alert for extreme heat has been declared across a large portion of the south-west.

This situation come after this month's fires in another state, which resulted in the destruction of properties and fatalities. Intense heatwave warnings have also been issued for later this week in areas within SA and New South Wales, as a ridge of atmospheric pressure moves eastward, bringing intense heat to much of the area.

The combination of extremely dry vegetation and relentless high temperatures presents a volatile scenario for firefighters.

Elsewhere, a metropolis was plunged into blackout last week after powerful winds compromised the city’s power grid, with toppled trees knocking out electricity cables. The weather conditions also caused significant transport delays at a major airport, where hundreds of air services were grounded. Substantial impact on electrical infrastructure is anticipated to create ongoing problems as service providers work urgently to reconnect electricity to more than 1 million residents.

Meanwhile, a region famed for its clear skies and plentiful sunlight has experienced one of its grayest and most overcast periods on recorded history. A particular form of low cloud, which typically lasts for only a short time, has been remarkably widespread and persistent this year, holding the mercury at a major airport under 8C for more than a week – the most prolonged period in more than three decades. The extended haze has been driven by exceptional autumn precipitation that resulted in the ground saturated.
