British Designer Antony Price, Famed for Styling Iconic Acts Like Bowie and Duran Duran, Dies at 80.
Fashion legend Antony Price, the visionary British fashion designer behind many legendary styles worn by musical icons like Bowie and members of Roxy Music, as well as Queen Camilla, has died at 80 years old.
His reputation was built on his sculptured silhouettes and theatrical styles, such as the light-hued ensembles that featured in the pop-rock group Duran Duran's landmark music video for "the song Rio".
"They honored him as a 'visionary' and a 'kind, intelligent and razor-witted friend,' Duran Duran shared a message across their platforms."
This news arrives shortly after he presented his most recent collection in London, marking his return to the runway after over three decades. Singer Lily Allen walked in a dress that paid homage to the famous black velvet "so-called 'revenge dress'" made famous by Princess Diana.
A Lasting Legacy
A native of Yorkshire, born in 1945, Price headed for London at the start of the 1960s to attend the prestigious Royal College of Art.
A year after graduating, he began designing menswear at the label Stirling Copper and was the creator of the form-fitting, button-fly pants that rock legend Mick Jagger famously wore during the iconic group's Gimme Shelter tour in 1969.
He established his eponymous line in 1979 and held his debut runway presentation a year later. The show opened with creations worn by the famed model Jerry Hall, who also wore the bridal gown Price specifically designed for her wedding to Sir Mick Jagger.
Collaborations with Icons
A key creative partner of the late David Bowie, Price designed the iconic jacket the star wore for his "As The World Falls Down" music video in 1986.
His signature ability to blend menswear and womenswear along with his technical proficiency in shaping body-hugging looks cemented his status as a "one-of-a-kind talent," as stated by the British Fashion Council.
During the nineties, he commenced designing outfits for the then-Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla, including several ensembles for her American tour following her marriage.
With a vocation that covered half a century, Price staged what would be his last show in London recently in conjunction with the fashion brand 16Arlington.
