A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has claimed the lives of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite opposition criticisms regarding the pace and management of the country's major public works projects.
The crash occurred on the trans-isthmus railway, a line constructed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This initiative was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring regional growth in the area.
“We will rigorously clarify the reasons behind this accident,” affirmed the head of state.
The leader confirmed that, of the some 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official noted plans to visit Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose term ended the year before. This rail line was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southern region.
Another massive rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a historically poorer part of the country.

The construction of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its role in civilian works. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially launched before the end of that administration.
However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently raised ongoing concerns over construction quality.
